¡Bienvenidos! I’m Rebecca G. Aguilar, M.Ed., writer, reader and member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI).
Born in the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo tribal community, I’m of proud Cocopa-Apache, Tigua and Mexican descent.
I kvell mostly about nonfiction for readers ages 6-18 (though I can appreciate a good novel). Please read my blog Mostly About Nonfiction for Q&As, news, reviews.
A Master of Education (Reading Specialist) with expertise in literacy, reading/writing in the content areas and learning with trade books, I also have kung fu in public relations and journalism. I carry on what I’ve learned writing news features and between gigs I’ve run a taco stand, archived news video and sold Saturn cars!
Picture my child self reading (quite loudly) from a book in the Folklore of the World series by Edward W. Dolch and Marguerite P. Dolch... with my Spanish-speaking mother nodding encouragement.
Mom gave us access to library books early. She also claims to have learned English words listening to her children read aloud.
Not only do I remember my all-time favorite Folklore of the World book, Stories of the Arabian Nights… I also loved Madeleine L’Engle’s A Wrinkle in Time and Lloyd Alexander’s Chronicles of Prydain series, which included the Newbery Medal winner The High King.
I came to understand the possibilities in a good book, both fiction and nonfiction. And I became an avid reader.
New or upcoming books for readers ages 6-18 on history, biography, science, the arts or poetry are considered for review at Mostly About Nonfiction. Please click here for examples of past nonfiction reviews, author interviews and book features.
Featured titles are library loans, bookstore purchases or advance reader copies. If you are a publisher, publicist or author sending an ARC... galley, digital or bound format are all acceptable.
